🇬🇧 Historical Way has been recognised as the best preserved walking trail in Portugal

Historical Way distinguished with "Best Of Responsible Trails"



The Historical Way of Rota Vicentina was distinguished by Responsible Trails, a responsible management system for walking and cycling trails, with the “Best Of Responsible Trails” award in the “Conservation” category.

This prize was given by a jury composed by Pedro Pedrosa (Responsible Trails), Pedro Machado (Turismo Centro de Portugal) and Filipe Morato Gomes (ABVP – Associação de Bloggers de Viagem Portugueses), after selecting a short list of nominees, this award assesses the conservation of the trails, both in terms of the maintenance and its surroundings, and encourages its walkers to become part of the environmental conservation process.


Besides having an innovative and effective strategy in the approach to the difficult question of permanent maintenance of the trail, where a professional team is complemented by the engagement of the communities and regular volunteering actions, Rota Vicentina promotes an integrated way the visitation and conservation of the several local patrimonies, stimulating the tourists to have a responsible attitude in their choices towards the visited communities.

The award ceremony “Best Of Responsible Trails“, took place in Tomar, during the event Vê Portugal – 8th Internal Tourism Forum on 7th June, in a cerimony which aimed to highlight some networks of trails, promoters and national destinations that are part of the project Responsible Trails and remains active in the investment and continuous search for sustainability.

The Historical Trail is a Walking Trail designed by the Rota Vicentina, classified as a classic Great Route (GR), which runs along 263 km of the Southwest of Portugal, from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de S. Vicente.

This trail is part of the GR11/E9 that connects Sagres to St. Petersburg and has also been recognised, since 2016, with the European Certification “Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe“, from the European Ramblers Association, being part of an exclusive lot of the best walking destinations in Europe.
