Vila Nova de Milfontes: Between the River and the Sea, a Place to Stay a Little Longer

16 minutos de leitura

An Inspiring Journey Through Heritage, Nature and the Authenticity of the Alentejo Coast

At the mouth of the Mira River, where the calm waters of the estuary meet the power of the Atlantic Ocean, Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the most iconic destinations on the Alentejo Coast and a favourite stop for those exploring the trails of the Rota Vicentina.

Affectionately known as the “Princess of Alentejo”, Vila Nova de Milfontes rewards those who take their time, wandering without haste, soaking up its atmosphere and discovering the small details that make this place so special.

Founded in the late 15th century by order of King João II, Vila Nova de Milfontes emerged as a strategic settlement designed to protect and populate Portugal’s southwest coast. For centuries, its story has been shaped by the meeting of river and ocean, with fishing, agriculture and maritime trade leaving a lasting imprint on the town’s identity.
Today, that heritage can still be felt throughout Vila Nova de Milfontes. From the historic Porto das Barcas, once the departure point for generations of fishermen, to the tranquil banks of the Mira River, the town remains deeply connected to the landscapes and traditions that have defined it for centuries.

To truly discover Vila Nova de Milfontes, start where its story begins: by the river.

From here, the Fort of São Clemente stands proudly on the horizon. Built in the 17th century to defend the river mouth from corsair and pirate attacks, it remains one of the town’s most striking landmarks, recalling an era when this coastline was as important for defence as it was admired for its natural beauty.

Yet the story of Vila Nova de Milfontes is not only one of fortresses and seafarers. The town is also linked to one of the most remarkable achievements in Portuguese aviation history. It was from the Coitos airfield, on the outskirts of Milfontes, that aviators Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires took off on 7 April 1924 to undertake the first aerial journey between Portugal and Macau.
Their pioneering flight marked a significant milestone in aviation and reinforced Vila Nova de Milfontes’ place in the history of Portuguese exploration and innovation.

The journey, regarded as an extraordinary achievement for its time, covered thousands of kilometres to the Far East and secured a lasting place in the history of Portuguese aviation. Near the Fort of São Clemente, in Largo da Barbacã, a monument honours the two aviators and preserves the memory of this pioneering adventure, which connected Vila Nova de Milfontes to one of the greatest milestones in Portugal’s aviation heritage.

Just a short walk away, the Historic Centre invites visitors to wander through whitewashed streets, charming squares, inviting terraces and traditional houses that reflect the relaxed pace of a town that has grown without losing its authenticity. At its heart stands the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, built on the remains of earlier places of worship and bearing witness to centuries of local history, faith and tradition.

Yet it is the relationship between the river and the ocean that makes Vila Nova de Milfontes truly special. At the mouth of the Mira River, one of the most striking landscapes on the Alentejo Coast, fresh waters meet the Atlantic among beaches, dunes and dramatic cliffs, creating a scene of remarkable natural beauty.
As evening falls and golden light bathes the estuary, with the Milfontes lighthouse standing out against the horizon, it becomes easy to understand why so many travellers choose to return.

For walkers and cyclists exploring the Rota Vicentina, Vila Nova de Milfontes is also a privileged gateway to the surrounding landscape. It marks the beginning or end of some of the most iconic stages of the Fishermen’s Trail, leading through some of the most spectacular coastal scenery within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.

Beyond the town, a network of circular routes offers the opportunity to discover some of the region’s lesser-known ecosystems, including the Mediterranean temporary ponds. These unique habitats, recognised for their exceptional biodiversity, transform with the changing seasons and provide a refuge for a remarkable variety of plant and animal species.

Vila Nova de Milfontes invites visitors to slow down and savour every moment

Whether enjoying freshly caught fish and the flavours of Alentejo cuisine, joining a guided walk to discover local stories, exploring the coastline by boat, learning to surf, or simply sitting by the river and watching the tides come and go, there are countless ways to enrich a stay beyond the trails.

It is also a place to connect with the people who bring this territory to life every day: family-run guesthouses, local restaurants, guides, small businesses and community projects that help preserve the authenticity and character of the region.

Perhaps that is why Milfontes remains in the hearts of so many who visit. More than just a stage on the journey, it is a place that reminds us of the value of slow travel. A place where every story, every landscape and every encounter reveals something deeper about the destination and the people who call it home.
