Heritage, landscapes and stories to discover on foot with this itinerary
Some cities are best discovered on foot. Santiago do Cacém is one of them. Set on a hilltop overlooking the Alentejo plains, with the sea on the horizon, the town invites you to wander through its streets, squares, monuments and paths, discovering, step by step, the many stories that shape the identity of this territory.
It is also here that the Historical Way of the Rota Vicentina begins, connecting Santiago do Cacém to the Algarve through rural paths, villages and landscapes across the inland Southwest. For those looking for a shorter experience, the circular Santiago Histórico route offers the chance to explore the town and its surrounding landscape on foot, combining heritage and nature.
History to discover on foot
In the historic centre, the best way to begin is simply to walk. At the top of the town, the Castle of Santiago do Cacém and the Mother Church of Santiago form one of the town’s most striking heritage ensembles. The castle walls, closely associated with the Order of Santiago, also offer privileged views over the Alentejo landscape.
As you make your way down through the historic streets, you’ll encounter other reminders of the town’s past, including the Misericórdia Church, the Pillory, the Chapel of São Pedro, the Clock Tower, and several buildings of historical and architectural interest. The Santiago do Cacém Municipal Museum, housed in the former Town Hall and prison, is another worthwhile stop for those wishing to learn more about the history and memories of the territory.
The Tapada dos Condes de Avillez is also well worth a visit. This former garden, inspired by Romantic and botanical traditions, was developed alongside the family’s palace and the castle walls. Now open to the public as a recreational and leisure space, it is a particularly pleasant place to slow down and enjoy a quieter side of the historic centre.
A few kilometres from the town, Miróbriga adds another dimension to this journey through time. Its archaeological site, with the remains of an important Roman city, including the forum, baths and hippodrome, is open to visitors and is one of the municipality’s key heritage landmarks.
Another reminder of the traditional activities that shaped the local landscape is the Quintinha Municipal Windmill. Restored and still in operation, it offers an opportunity to discover the traditional process of grain milling and the importance of windmills in the rural life of the region.
Paths connecting the town with the surrounding landscape
The history of Santiago do Cacém is not found only in its monuments. It is also present in the landscapes that surround them and in the paths that, for centuries, have connected the town with the countryside and neighbouring communities.
This relationship with the surrounding territory is something the Rota Vicentina allows you to experience at close range. Setting out from Santiago along the Historical Way, the urban landscape gradually gives way to farmland, cork oak landscapes, small villages and rural paths. It is a way to discover a quieter, more authentic side of the Southwest and to understand how the town connects with the territory around it.
Within the town itself, Rio da Figueira Park offers another opportunity to walk and pause. The urban park follows this watercourse, creating a green leisure space where the landscape and traces of the traditional use of water, such as the watermill and aqueduct, help tell a lesser-known part of the local story.
A town where traditions are still alive
Santiago do Cacém também se descobre através das suas festas, feiras e iniciativas culturais. Ao longo do ano, o calendário local é uma oportunidade para conhecer uma cidade que continua a celebrar as suas tradições e, ao mesmo tempo, a criar novos momentos de encontro.
A Santiagro – Feira Agropecuária e do Cavalo, que decorreu habitualmente no último fim de semana de Maio, é um dos grandes acontecimentos do concelho, reunindo agricultura, pecuária, cavalos, empresas, associações, gastronomia e animação, representando a forte ligação de Santiago do Cacém ao mundo rural.
No final do verão, a Feira do Monte, no primeiro fim de semana de Setembro, leva à cidade o ambiente de uma das suas mais tradicionais festas populares, com música, gastronomia, artesanato e animação. É uma boa ocasião para sentir Santiago do Cacém num registo particularmente festivo e comunitário.
A programação cultural passa também pelos livros e pelas artes. A Festa do Livro reúne autores, leitores e diferentes expressões artísticas, criando novos motivos para visitar o centro histórico e descobrir Santiago através da cultura.
Ao longo do ano, outros eventos, festas e iniciativas locais completam um calendário que mostra que o património de Santiago do Cacém não está apenas nos seus monumentos: está também nas pessoas, nas tradições e na vida que continua a acontecer na cidade.
